Immigration 'compact' in Utah an alternative to Arizona law
Immigration 'compact' in Utah an alternative to Arizona law

A coalition of conservative Utah leaders says the state shouldn't share its neighbor's tough approach to illegal immigration.
An Arizona-style immigration bill has already been introduced in the Utah Legislature that would require police to enforce federal immigration laws. But political, religious and community leaders are offering "The Utah Compact," as an alternative, calling for a federal rather than a state or local solution to the nation's broken immigration system.
The compact supports policies that preserve the state's free-market tradition and don't split up immigrant families.
"We could do an Arizona-style approach, a round 'em up approach, an approach of starving them out," Paul Mero, president of the conservative think tank Sutherland Institute, said Friday on a conference call with reporters. "But as a conservative and believer in freedom, there is no way in hell I will be part of rounding up innocent people. And as an ethical and moral person ... I'm not going to be part of starving them out. That leaves one option: helping them."
The compact has been endorsed by a number of Utah Republicans, including Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, former Govs. Olene Walker and Norman Bangerter and Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker.
While Utahans believe in the rule of law, Shurtleff said, an enforcement-only approach to illegal immigration is "counterproductive and harmful."
"Making every cop using questionable grounds to determine if someone is here legally or illegally will create huge problems for law enforcement," he said on the conference call organized by the National Immigration Forum, which advocates for comprehensive immigration reform.
Arizona's controversial immigration law, which was signed last spring by Republican Gov. Jan Brewer but is tied up in the federal courts, has remained popular among voters and helped fuel Republican victories in the midterm elections.
But Lane Beattie, president of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce and the former state Senate president, argued that Utah faces different issues than Arizona, which shares a 370-mile border with Mexico.
"The reality is Arizona is different than Utah," Beattie said. "Arizona is dealing with issues that we are not dealing with."
Added Mero: "Utah isn't Arizona. And I think up to now, Utahans have not had an alternative to an Arizona-style approach and Arizona-style debate. Now with the Utah compact, you have an alternative."

Utah is not tough on illegals like Arizona because churches side with illegals and don't want to see them deported, especially illegals from Mexico. They don't care much about illegals from other countries. Those get deported as soon as they're caught.

I live in Utah and I can tell you this is the biggest crock ever concocted. The overwhelming majority in the state want the law enforced and illegals thrown out of here. This is nothing but an attempt to "shoot from behind a rock" and advocate amnesty without actually admitting that that's what you are doing.
Those who have signed are getting big time push back they are all nothing but a bunch of open borders advocates who think they stop the AZ style law that is coming soon.
One of the signers is Ivory Homes, who is listed on wehirealiens.com, as one of the biggest employers of illegals in the state. The rest are all self serving special interests who exploit illegals as well. One of the most surprising signers is the United Way, if you donate to them it is time to stop, they have now been flushed out as amnesty advocates in their support of this silly compact.

Every one ---
Every one of these illegal supporters, most of whom have Hispanic surnames, (ethnicity more valuable than America), know that the federal government is incapable of administering immigration control.
The reuirements are too large considering the enormous number of illegal entries. Therefore their argumant is and wil continue to be, that only the feds should handle the program.
Out federal government is sitting on their hands since the current admin wants future Democrats.
It is an undeclared war on America by Americans who would destroy the fiber and substance of the greatest republic to ever exist.
The federal government needs to work hand in hand with all state and local governments or they never will control the issue.
Further, on a personal note, I believe any employer who KNOWINGLY hires an illegal should have his/her business license removed and spend two years in jail.

Governing Principles
The Sutherland Institute uses a core set of seven guiding principles as a guideline for shaping Utah law and policy.
Personal Responsibility as the basis of self-government
A free and prosperous Utah requires personal responsibility from its people. This means that every Utahn should act with personal initiative; that every Utahn should act with honesty and integrity; that every Utahn recognize how their own life fits into the world around them; that every Utahn should make personal choices to avoid a spectrum of dependencies on their neighbors; and, that every Utahn should support public policies that give deference to people to make personal choices, give wide latitude to people to freely succeed and fail, and that assume trust in each other to do the right thing.
Family as the fundamental unit of society
A free and prosperous Utah requires strong family structures. This means that every Utahn should value and respect legal marriage; that every Utahn should value and welcome children into their home; that every Utahn should value and cherish intergenerational bonds; that every Utahn should value and view their “pursuit of happinessâ€NO AMNESTY

They are not innocent if they are here illegally - they have committed a crime. And they absolutely do not starve while being deported. Have you ever heard of a single illegal alien being starved when caught, awaiting deportation, and then deported...
What a bunch of BS.As Aristotle said, “Tolerance and apathy are the first virtue of a dying civilization.â€
