HOUSTON, TX

An alarming new study on welfare by the center for immigration studies is raising some eyebrows. The report says 54 percent of Texans use at least one government welfare program.
Here is what some Houstonians who wish to remain anonymous had to say...

"I think that's and unfortunate number, that's a really high number, it's sad"

What's even more troubling is the number of illegal immigrants collecting the same benefits that U.S. citizens are. It's reported that 70 percent of illegal’s are taking advantage of government programs and signing up for welfare.

"That system needs to be improved, that's a lot of money to be giving them." "If you go thru the process as a citizen, then it' ok, if not, the government shouldn't support them." "The thought that someone who doesn't pay taxes getting public assistance bites me the wrong way."

There was an overwhelming response from Houstonians on this touchy subject

"If you're gonna come to our state, at least do all the same things we have to." "I don't believe any type of illegal alien should receive any benefits."

But not everyone agrees...

"If they're here and they're working, then they should get help."

With Texas ranking second in the country for highest welfare rates, adding the problem of immigration is just another sign that this country and this economy has a long way to go.

First of all legal immigrants pretty much can't get welfare

The whole problem totally is that the illegals are using anchor babies to get every benny on the books , thats it ,

They will argue that illegals don't get benefits, Well , in a sense they are correct , but they pump out anchor after anchor and watch the cash and bennys add up

In Illinois illegals DO get benefits. My neighbor works for the county and if she is given a social security card or other i.d. she can't ask if they're legal. They can buy a social security card on any corner and get any benefit they choose.

Many undocumented aliens arrives to this Country illegally and receives welfare benefits. Citizens; however, have a difficult time receiving any type of assistance's, although they are unemployed, and have no means of support. Laws need to be enforced against illegal aliens, if not this Country will be destroyed totally. Everyone saw what happen last night...Government almost shut down. The billions of dollars used to support illegals plays great a role in the problem.

Illegals surely do get free benefits- all the taxpayer funded prenatal care that is given to them, no questions asked.

Go figure. Texas has a budget shortfall of $27 billion and what do we do? Cut police, fireman and teachers. Meanwhile we continue to allow 53% of the people in Texas and over 70% of illegals here to suck taxpayers dry. Wonder when someone in our State government is going to grow the gonads to stand up and end this waste?

all the states need to do is start investigating everyone who applies for benefits of any kind

Yeah and to think we keep having to hear about the poor families that just want to come here and work hard for a better life. BS! The 70% are stealing as much money as they can from American tax payers and the other 30% don't need the money because they are dealing drugs. meanwhile our government turns their heads.
