La Raza: Study identifies trends of Hispanics

Translation from La Raza. There are some interesting statements about their concerns, how they identify themselves, the language they speak -the respondents. I put this here because illegal immigration and citizenship is mentioned.

    It identifies trends of Hispanics

    EFE | March 25, 2008

Los Angeles .- A panel of experts convened in Los Angeles yesterday analyzed data from the National Survey of America (LNS in English) 2006 in which delineates the cultural trends of the Hispanic population in the USA

In a presentation yesterday at the University of Southern California (USC) and supported by the Jesse Unruh Institute of Policy, the Center for the Study of Los Angeles Loyola Marymount University and the Tomas Rivera Policy Institute (TRPI in English ), we examined the major trends found in the LNS.

The president of TRPI, Harry Pachón, highlighted in the presentation of the analysis, "is the first time the trends and highlights of the LNS were studied by the authors in Southern California."

The survey was applied to 8,600 people in 15 states and the presentation was attended by three of the principal investigators, Luis Fraga and Gary Segura of the University of Washington and John Garcia of the University of Arizona.

"Redefining America: Results Keys to the National Survey America 2006 1989 and shows the great changes that the Latino community has suffered since that year, noted Professor John Garcia to report that two-thirds of respondents identify themselves with the United States.

Respondents, however, were reported with different identities being "Latino" one.

When asked to choose only one word to identify itself, the number of respondents from the first generation who chose "American" ( "American" in English) was low but increased substantially for Latinos born in the country, said Garcia.

With respect to 1989, nearly twice as many respondents identified in a multicultural context, highlighting women's participation in this multi-ethnic identity.

With regard to the voting preferences and the membership of political parties, Professor Luis Fraga noted that Latinos registered to vote in general-including those born in the country - are described themselves as more Democrats than as Republicans in a relationship two to one.

However, naturalized citizens are divided equally between the two parties and 25.7 percent of them described themselves as independents.

Both citizens and non-citizens, by a ratio of more than 30 percent, pointed to the Iraq war as the most important issue facing the nation.

The issue of illegal immigration was named as "the greatest concern among Latinos, education and schools siguiéndolo closely, scored professor at the University of Washington.

The researchers noted that immigrants in the United States lose contact with their countries of origin insofar as the years go by.

The survey showed that contact with family and friends, as well as sending money to their countries of origin and plans to return, decreases markedly among Latinos, the more increased their length of stay in the United States.

The 75 percent of Latino immigrants reported Spanish as their first language to use for the media, in its first year in the United States.

From that point, the use of English is increasing dramatically, with a large majority emphasizing the importance of speaking English, "as part of being American.

Latinos make up 13.2 percent of the population of the United States and its participation in the total population is expected to reach 22, 5 percent by the year 2030.

Recent projections of the Census, estimated California's Latino population by nearly 37 percent of the more than 10 million people in the Golden State. EFE

Call me wierd, but isn't that the point when you leave your country and want to be a part of this one?

You leave your old life behind and become a part of this one. I can't see how you can immigrate to another country and not be expected to do that. Otherwise you vacation somewhere........

Maybe I take citizenship extreemly seriously.......kind of like marraige......you don't get married when your intent is to live the single life or you want the benefits without the responsibilities, while you're waiting for the perfect person to come along. Just doesn't work. Screws up your single life and your married life till you aren't wanted in either arena. Nobody is going to take any of your wants and desires seriously or count on you when you can't make up your mind where your commitment lies.

Exactly.....so why should I waste my time and effort wondering if they're being treated fairly, or are comfortable....? I don't.....you get what you give.
