LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Gov. Mike Huckabee said Wednesday the nation is being given a chance to make up for past racism by the way it handles the influx of Hispanics.
Huckabee, a Republican who is considering a run for president in 2008, said Arkansas has made progress on racial justice and has a fresh opportunity to do the right thing in the way it welcomes the growing Hispanic population.
"One of the great challenges facing us is that we do not commit the same mistakes with our growing Hispanic population that we did with African Americans 150 years ago and beyond. We're still paying the price for the pathetic manner in which this country handled that," Huckabee said at a meeting of the Political Animals Club in Little Rock. The club meets monthly to hear from political figures and experts.
"I think, frankly, the Lord is giving us a second chance to do better than we did before," Huckabee said.
Huckabee said he will announce after he leaves office Jan. 9 whether he will run for president. He said he is not posturing for the vice presidential nomination.
"If I make a decision at all, it won't be to run for the second position on the ticket. I've never seen a football team run out on the field and say we're Number Two," Huckabee said.
Later, on his monthly radio call-in show, Huckabee said he wants to make sure he would have financial and organizational support in places like Iowa and New Hampshire before announcing any bid.
"I want to make sure there would be strong support, not just financial, but also volunteer support around the country, particularly in the early primary states," Huckabee said. "If you can get through those early states, then frankly you're in the game and if you can't you're not."
Huckabee said a book he's written that will be released in January will also help him determine whether there's any support for his potential candidacy. What's the price is freedom...today? Veteran, US Army, E-5, 1978-1982 *****Ron Paul for President 2008***** http://www.ronpaul2008.com/issues/

I get so po'd when people compare this illegal invasion to the blacks being brought here. There is absolutely NOTHING similar about the two - and the numbers of people coming here is OUTRAGEOUS.
Is every psycho in this country running for president? Sheesh. The John McCain Call Center

There is such a disconnect between slavery and people breaking our laws coming here. Doesn't this just annoy the heck out of you that someone would try to reference them together?
All I can say to Gov. Huckleberry, is to save his money.<div>Thank you Governor Brewer!</div>

You know what would be really smart, granted risky, but smart. Is to have some anti illegal candidate run for president, but run as a someone who thinks like these guys do. Just be very non comittal on immigration, don't reveal your position really. Get all the financial support from these shysters in the GOP by pretending to be like one of them and then when you win election, reveal your true colors. Give these CFR freaks a taste of their own medicine.
Tom Tancredo can't do it because we all know what his position is and he's too well known. It have to be someone they'd least expect. Who would be smart enough to pull off such a devious plan?
Wouldn't it be great if this candidate said after election "remember what I said about giving illegals amnesty? I lied. Illegals start packing"

The way that immigrants were welcomed after 1880 was part of the way that the Blacks were kept down. After the Civil War with the loss of population and the repairs to the preexising damaged infrastructure Blacks had started to make headway. Then it was at that point as American working conditions had started to improve and wages were rising immigrants were allowed to come in and to receive benefits over Blacks. An honest statement by Huckabee is that amnesty for illegals is an action against Blacks.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
