Deported counterfeiter had been living in Harlingen

A deported counterfeiter is behind bars in the Rio Grande Valley after learned he had been living in Harlingen.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested Santiago Lazo-Gonzales on Wednesday.

The 49-year-old Cuban national came in from Mexico at Brownsville’s Gateway International Bridge.

Customs officers learned that he had been previously deported from the United States for counterfeiting in Miami.

Lazo-Gonzales now faces a charge for violating the terms of his release from federal prison.

The Cuban man appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald Morgan in Brownsville on Thursday morning.

Investigators told Action 4 News that Lazo-Gonzales had been living in Harlingen.

Judge Morgan denied bond for Lazo-Gonzales pending his extradition to Miami.
