Are Global Warming Deniers 'Neanderthals'?

When U.S. Senator John Kerry spoke to constituents at a recent town hall gathering, he didn't hold his tongue when describing the - let's just say opposition - to climate change science. And it led to an unusual exchange with one audience member.

"The biggest fight we have on the environment right now in Washington is not going forward, it is preventing these Neanderthals, troglodytes, whatever you call them, from going backward - preventing them from attacking the EPA, preventing the EPA from doing anything about clean air for the next few years."

When one woman in the audience took umbrage at being called a neanderthal, Kerry said he wasn't speaking directly of her. Unless, of course, she happens to be one, in his eyes:

"When I called somebody a Neanderthal I don't think I was referring to you [woman in audience], unless you don't believe in the science of climate change. I was talking about people who don't believe in the science of climate change."
