Three prominent House committee chairmen on Thursday floated a suspension on funds for processing and releasing illegal migrants into the U.S.
"I think we should just say ... no money can be used to process or release into the country any new migrants," House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said on the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show. "The problem is so egregious and so bad. We gotta just say 'timeout. Suspend entry.'"
During a private meeting with border patrol agents in Eagle Pass, Texas earlier this week, Mayorkas admitted that the release rate for illegal immigrants apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border is "above 85%," sources told Fox News.
"Now there can be a few exceptional things, like if you got someone who needs emergency surgery or something," Jordan elaborated. "Okay, I understand that. But right now, it's just an open border."
Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., lent his support to Jordan's plan, saying, "[t]hat's the most logical proposal that I have seen."
He, however, added that the only way to truly secure the border would be to elect a new president.
"You're not going to secure the border until we actually have a White House that is willing to make America safe and to stop the droves and the millions of people illegally coming across our southern border," Loudermilk said.
House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green, R-Tenn. said he hopes suspending funds for processing illegal immigrants is a point on which Congress will stand firm.
"There's that individual who has a humanitarian need such as a little kid that's gonna go to a hospital and you parole for the parent for just 24 days to come in or whatever, I'm okay with those exceptions," Greene said in an interview for an upcoming episode of the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show. "But look, we need to shut the southern border and that means no dollars for any additional immigrants that come across the southern border."
