Kidnapping arrest warrant issued in alleged Avon abduction

AVON, Colo. (AP) -- Police have issued a kidnapping arrest warrant for a convicted sex offender accused of abducting two of his Honduran girlfriend's three children.

Police believe Pedro Mata Rodriguez is taking the children of Hilda Vargas, ages 15 and 11, to his native Mexico.

"He cannot take her kids, and there's enough probable cause to believe he's with them," said Avon Police Chief Brian Kozak. Vargas' youngest child, a 5-year-old boy whose name wasn't released, said his siblings had left with Rodriguez.

Kozak said Rodriguez may already be in Mexico.
The FBI and National Center for Missing and Exploited Children have been enlisted to help in the search for Jessica Marbella Garcia, 15, and Jose Luis Cerrato, 11. Their mother, declined to meet with the media.

Kozak said Rodriguez had been deported to Mexico after being convicted in 1995 of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child in Florida. He eventually returned to the U.S.

I'm sure that is because she is an illegal alien. What other mother would pass up the opportunity to plead for her children through the media?

I thought they were out of the shadows now, why would that keep her from coming forward? this is what I fail to understand about their culture, at a time like this why would you let anything stand in the way of doing what was best for your kids?

She might be an illegal too, afraid of attracting attention from ICE.

Just how many illegal alien criminal deportees who return to the U.S. to commit more crimes will wake up Bush and his stooges like Chertoff and Myers to actually secure the border?

Children feared kidnapped from Colorado are safe in Honduras

    Associated Press

DENVER - Two children who were reported kidnapped from the Colorado mountains by a sex offender turned up unharmed with relatives in Honduras, police said Tuesday, and investigators now believe they left on their own because they missed their grandmother.

"It's my understanding that what happened was that the girl and her little brother and an aunt were going to Honduras, and this guy hopped a ride with them," Eagle County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert said.

Hurlbert said no charges would be filed. Police said it wasn't clear whether the children's mother, Hilda Vargas, would try to get them back.

Jessica Garcia, 15, and Jose Luis Cerrato, 11, were reported missing from Avon, a small town about 80 miles west of Denver, on Aug. 11. Police issued an Amber alert and a kidnapping arrest warrant for Pedro Mata Rodriguez, who was dating Vargas, 33, a Honduran native.

Police said Rodriguez, 31, of Mexico had been convicted of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child in Florida. Vargas did not know of Rodriguez's past until after her children left, police said.

Avon police spokeswoman Krista Jaramillo said the grandmother raised the children for most of their lives, and it appears that Jessica decided to return to the grandmother's home after a confrontation with her mother.

Jaramillo said Jessica's brother and aunt and Rodriguez decided to go with her.

The four took a bus to Texas, where Rodriguez left them, Jaramillo said. The children and the aunt, Elizabeth Barahona Oneida, 26, then crossed the border at El Paso, Texas, took a bus to San Pedro, Honduras, and a cab to the grandmother's home, Jaramillo said.

Vargas had issued a tearful plea for her children's return last week.

"She's just really relieved the children are with her mom and no longer in the company of Pedro Rodriguez," Jaramillo said.

Vargas had no listed phone number. She has a 5-year-old son who stayed in Avon with her.

Rodriguez's whereabouts were unknown, Jaramillo said. Police said he is an illegal immigrant who was deported after his 1995 conviction in Florida.

Jaramillo said police will seek a new charge against Rodriguez of failing to register as a sex offender. She said federal immigration officials would be alerted.
