UMKC Speaks With Groups Opposing Candidate's Part In Arizona Legislation

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kris Kobach's role in the Arizona immigration law controversy is causing some backlash at the University of Missouri, Kansas City.

KMBC's Micheal Mahoney reported that Kobach, a law professor at UMKC, is attracting the attention of groups that are calling for sanctions.

UMKC held a meeting Monday afternoon to listen to the groups' concerns.

Kobach has been on the faculty since 1996. He has also been involved in Arizona's immigration issue for years.

The Arizona law has inspired several legal challenges. Kobach said, "We drafted this bill anticipating that these same groups on the left would bring a legal challenge, and it's designed to withstand legal challenge."

Chris Salazar, UMKC alum, said, "As an individual, I'm very alarmed, as an alumnus of this institution, about that type of issue's impact on the community."

Floretino Camacho's concern is whether Kobach is teaching the law or his own views on the law.

UMKC has issued a statement that said that Kobach's involvement in the law is not work done on the behalf of the university.

Kobach told KMBC, "It is disturbing when some groups think a professor should be disciplined or lose his job because he is a conservative, or believes that immigration laws should be enforced."

The university's provost said that it will defend Kobach's academic freedom rights.

    Is that so?

But this doesn't concern or alarm you?

The Chicano activists' mission at that time -- as documented in the book "MAYO: Avant-Garde to the Chicano Movement in Texas" by University of California-Riverside Professor Armando Navarro -- "was to eliminate and replace the gringo," says Jose Angel Gutierrez, director of the Center for Mexican American Studies at the University of Texas-Arlington.

Struggling against Jim Crow institutions, Chicano activists also won school board elections in South Texas, but soon found out that Anglos remained embedded in power as teachers and administrators. This knowledge, says Angel Gutierrez, is what triggered the creation of La Raza Unida Party -- the first and only political party for Chicanos: "We became the electoral arm of the Chicano movement."

Genevieve Aguilar, a senior at Hanks High School in El Paso, says the Chicano movement is "definitely not dead" -- that it lives in students like herself who battle against people who believe that racism no longer exists and who don't see a need for Chicano or Latino programs.
Oh yes racism certainly exists in chicano society, witness how blacks are treated in mexico.

Just look at the difference in the crowds attitudes in a Tea Party verses what happened after the signing of the SB1070 in Arizona. Even the Tea party members did not riot in the streets when Obama signed the healthcare bill into law.
