Kris Kobach, the Republican candidate for secretary of state who authored the controversial Arizona immigration law, will debate a prominent immigration attorney during a Tuesday, Oct. 19 presentation at the University of Kansas.

Anthony "Tony" Weigel, a Kansas City-area immigration attorney who opposes the Arizona law, will debate the law's merits with Kobach at 12:30 p.m. in room 104 of Green Hall, 1535 W. 15th Street.

Kobach, currently a law professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, is a former Kansas Republican Party chairman who directed the Justice Department's attempts to tighten the U.S.-Mexico borders under the administration of President George W. Bush.

The debate is sponsored by the Kansas Law chapter of The Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies.
