Kyl reiterates need for border fencing
The Business Journal of Phoenix - 2:40 PM MST Thursdayby Mike SunnucksThe Business Journal
Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl is defending construction of new barriers along the U.S.-Mexican border saying they are necessary to improve security and move forward with other immigration reform.
The Republican Congress approved a plan for border fences and funding last year in an effort to curtail illegal immigration and drug trafficking in Arizona and other border states. But some Democrats want to revisit the issue.
"These barriers are a key component to achieving a secure border, and a secure border is required for any comprehensive immigration reform to succeed," said Kyl, a Republican, in a statement.
President Bush, Arizona Sen. John McCain, business groups and a number of moderate Republicans and Democrats favor some kind of guest worker program and a legal path for undocumented workers already in the U.S.
