L.A. County Deputy Shot To Death

    Jun 25, 2005 1:55 am US/Pacific

HAWAIIAN GARDENS, Calif. (CBS) A 35-year-old sheriff's deputy who had gone to work early to get a jump on a street gang investigation was shot to death as he was interviewing people, authorities said.

Deputy Jerry Ortiz had just knocked on a door and was talking to a woman who lived there when he was shot point blank in the head about 3 p.m. Friday, said Undersheriff Larry Waldie.

"Someone came out either nearby or from the residence and put a bullet through his head," Waldie said.

The suspected gunman was identified as Jose Luiz Orozco, 27, who was last seen wearing a blue-and-white shirt and knee-length khaki shorts, said Deputy Steve Suzuki. Photos released by authorities showed Orozco with a shaved head and devil's horns tattooed onto his forehead. His back, arms and chest were also heavily tattooed.

Deputies sealed off streets in this blue-collar city 20 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles and searched late into the night for Orozco, who already was wanted on an outstanding warrant issued in an attempted murder case.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department asked the public's help in apprehending him, but also noted he is considered armed and dangerous.

Ortiz, who was wed about three weeks ago, is survived by his wife and two sons, ages 16 and 6. He was a 15-year veteran of the department and had been a member of its anti-gang unit for the past five years.

Waldie said Ortiz, who had recently returned from his honeymoon, had started work early Friday, which he added was not unusual for him.

Scores of sheriff's deputies who either raced to the scene of the shooting or gathered at a hospital where Ortiz was pronounced dead appeared stunned and distraught.

"He was trying to stop the senseless violence that was the senseless violence that took his life," said sheriff's Sgt. Brian Stover. "Am I angry about that? Yes."

Waldie appeared red-eyed as he spoke to reporters.

Sheriff Lee Baca, who was out of state at a convention, immediately left for Southern California. He scheduled a news conference for noon Saturday at his headquarters in Monterey Park.

In suburban Diamond Bar, where Ortiz lived with his wife and sons, people on his block appeared equally stunned.

"I think there are a lot of people out here who are saddened at the madness we call LA," said neighbor Tom Boyd.

They're stunned? What did they expect?? They've been pandering to illegal aliens of every stripe for decades, ignoring rampant gang activity or giving them a 'talk' or a slap on the wrist for such activity...they've listened to 'bleeding heart stuff' about the illegals denying what was going on under their very noses. They've thought that those who were breaking the law would certainly respect the REST of our laws. This state has been the epitome of gullible for too long. When they finally tried to curb it a bit with prop 187 then it was too late..ninth circuit overruled the stated desires of their taxpayers....and the beat went on and on.

I suppose the stunned citizens of LA and Calif have no lawyers worthy of the name among them...or they'd have fought that 9th circus court to the very ground....

PS...We're fighting on so many fronts now...if we're not very careful we're going to lose our nation...at this moment...this very moment we should be demanding satisfaction from our legislatures about that supreme court decision that destroys our constitution...the congress cannot let that decision stand...and we should also be raising old billy hell about that trilateral meeting...I know we're about immigration primarily...and that's a good thing....but a side trip or two for other very important causes won't take too much away from our main thrust will it?

American Patrol's website reported some information about the area of the shooting as follows:

Hawaiian Gardens, Calif. - 6 PM - Note: This is a situation that has been going on since about 3:30 pm PDT. At least one officer has been shot by an apparent gangster. An area resident interviewed on the air live said that the area is a "rat's nest", that shots are heard every day in the area, and that the area is crawling with illegal aliens. Several Hispanics were taken into custody shortly after 4 pm.

LA is a sanctuary city with a Hispanic mayor. So it might seem these vermin think they have open license to commit their atrocities.

Time for an old-fashioned roundup and subsequent deportation to the southernmost tip of South America. That way, it will make the repeat offenders at crossing the border a little longer to get back.

Tragic, he is in my prayers. I heard on the officer.com forum that Deputy Ortiz has a brother who was an officer with the CA Dept of Corrections and was killed in the line of duty (stabbed in a prison fight) a few months ago. Must be tough for his family, god bless all those LEOs.

MAMIE--we're all talking about the same US Supreme Court decision concerning New London, Connecticut where a city (or state) (or feds) can take private property by eminent domain to give it to other private concerns.

Search ALIPAC for the story under Supreme Court. It was posted Thursday.
