I have met Sheriff Baca and I can tell you that although his intentions might be good, he has failed to give the heat back to county supervisors, chief among them, Zev Yaroslavsky and Gloria Molina who have opposed any cooperation with the ICE in turning illegal alien criminals and gang members over to them for deportation.

The problem as documented by Full Disclosure: http://www.fulldisclosure.net/flash/Vid ... Blog13.php

Sheriff Baca knows from his own study that he can fix the overcrowded jail conditions by simply turning over the estimated 40,000 illegal alien inmates to ICE, but he is a passive wimp who is easily intimidated by county supervisors. We need a Sheriff who knows how to knock doors down, something Baca has yet to learn.

L.A. County needs less criminals more than it needs more deputies -- but the supervisors (apart from Mike Antonovich) just don't get it.

On July 13, 2004, at a county meeting, Sheriff Baca asked the supervisors to impose a 1/2 cent sales tax to hire more deputies, but avoided the issue of using jail deputies to weed out illegal alien inmates for turnover to ICE. Then L.A. mayoral candidate Walter Moore and and anti-crime activist Hal Netkin spoke at that meeting.
