Illegal immigrant accused of making forged checks

PORT ALLEN, LA (WAFB) -
A man living in this country illegally was arrested for allegedly making fake payroll checks from the company where he worked.

According to the Port Allen Police Department, Emerito Hernandez, 41, was part of a group that created forged payroll checks from Southern Packaging Inc.

Detectives said Hernandez lives in Port Allen but is originally from Honduras.

The company contacted police after realizing about 23 fake checks, totaling $16,749, had been cashed through its payroll account.

Investigators said Hernandez worked for Southern Packaging since the beginning of the year, but used the name Jorge Bustillo.

He was booked into the West Baton Rouge Parish Detention Center on 23 counts of principal to felony theft and 23 counts of forgery.

The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement also charged him for being in the United States illegally.

Bond has not been set.

The investigation is ongoing.
