President Vicente Fox said his country is battling illegal immigration to the United States.
WASHINGTON - President Vicente Fox said Sunday that his country is working hard to combat illegal immigration into the United States.
"Our obligation is to grant opportunities to our people in Mexico," Fox told CNN´s Late Edition in a satellite interview from Mexico. "Our people don´t want to be there as long as they have opportunities here."
During a two-day summit last week, Fox met in Cancún with U.S. President George W. Bush to discuss immigration and border security. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper also attended the summit.
Fox called the migration issue "a responsibility that we share, both countries." Mexicans in the United States, he said, "are being hired by somebody. (The) U.S. economy needs this energy, needs this working force."
He added, "We are not just going to sit down here in Mexico and say, ´Oh, very good, we have now the opportunity to send people there.´ No way. We understand our responsibility."
"We work hard on the enforcement of the law and the security on the border," Fox said.
The U.S. Senate´s Judiciary Committee last week approved a bill aimed at strengthening enforcement of U.S. borders, regulating the flow into the country of so-called guest workers, and determining the legal future of the millions of illegal immigrants scattered across all 50 states.
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, a Republican, said Sunday that he wants a full Senate vote on an immigration bill this week.Support our FIGHT AGAINST illegal immigration & Amnesty by joining our E-mail Alerts at http://eepurl.com/cktGTn
