La Raza Demands Obama's Health Reform Plan Cover Illegal Aliens

On Monday, June 15, the National Council of La Raza (La Raza), an open borders advocacy group, issued a statement calling upon Congress to ensure that illegal aliens are given health benefits if and when Congress considers health care reform.

La Raza's statement "strongly urged President Obama and Congress to make every effort to ensure that health care reform reaches all communities" in the United States, and stressed that "one out of every three uninsured persons and roughly 40% of all uninsured children [in the United States] are Latino," and demanded "health care reform that makes coverage affordable and accessible for everyone — all families and all children."

La Raza President and CEO Janet MurguÃ*a used the statement to emphasize that "everyone in the U.S. should contribute to a new health system," and that "Latinos [would] accept their responsibility" to contribute to a new health care system and "will pay their fair share for the health coverage they need." While the statement does not reference illegal immigration specifically, or distinguish between legal and illegal aliens, it does express concern that adding new, expensive verification and documentation procedures for immigrants would "severely restrict access to health care coverage." (La Raza Press Release, June 15, 2009).

Specific research has shown that many illegal aliens lack health insurance and represent a disproportionate share of the United States' uninsured population. The Pew Hispanic Center's recent report, A Portrait of Unauthorized Immigrants in the United States, found that 59% of illegal aliens in the United States had no form of health insurance in 2007, and that 45% of illegal alien children were also without health coverage in 2007. It also found that even the U.S.-born children of illegal aliens were insured at the low rate of 25%, and that there was a significant disparity between the volume of uninsured illegal aliens and the volume of uninsured U.S. citizens and other legal residents. (Pew Hispanic Center Report, April 14, 2009).

Pew's information has support in federal statistics: data collected by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Census Bureau for the same time frame show that approximately 33.2% of the foreign-born population in the United States (a category which does not differentiate between newly naturalized citizens, legal permanent residents, and illegal aliens) were uninsured in 2007, and that almost 10 million foreign-born non-citizens lacked health insurance in 2007. THIS IS EXACTLY THE REASON THE SO CALLED HEALTH REFORM WON'T PASS WITH CONGRESS.

WHO'S GOING TO PAY FOR THIS? PRIVATE EMPLOYERS WOULD SOONER DUMP THEIR INSURANCE AS OPPOSED TO PAY FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T WORK FOR THEM.

For La Raza everything, for those not La Raza nothing.

I think even LaRaza doubts any health care reform will actually explicitly state it includes coverage for illegal aliens.

What we need to monitor and fight against is any health reform stating it will cover legal residents. If health care passes that way, then they will try to pass amnesty, make all aliens legal, and voila! the illegal invaders are covered. I really believe this is their plan.

In the past there have been laws to provide a dis-incentive for immigrants to come here just for welfare benefits. Immigrants were not eligible for most benefits until after they became citizens, not just legal residents, and additionally there was a five year waiting period after they became citizens.

In fact, they have already started to make changes along these lines. When the SCHIP health care program was expanded back in approx Feb 09, they eliminated the 5-year waiting period for new citizens, so now a person is eligible immediately upon citizenship. (Of course they included all sorts of other loopholes, so even children who are not citizens would actually get SCHIP coverage.)

We cannot have socialist programs like socialized medicine AND be a nation of immigrants at the same time, that allows anyone coming here to be eligible for social/welfare programs, even before they achieve citizenship. This is one of the main ways immigration today is nothing like it was when many of our ancestors came here, though the ethnocentric advocates like to claim it is the same.

Big business just loves this. They get their cheap labor, depressing wages, with an invasion from third world countries, and they can just pass on the costs to the rest of us, including health care.

Man, La Raza's true colors are really starting to shine as of late.

Time for LA RAZA to be exposed just as ACORN is being exposed.....a radical, leftist, racist, pro-illegal alien professional diversity/ethnic extortionists operating with tens of millions of U.S. taxpayer monies, highly skilled in corporate, government shake-downs as well.

WE ARE NOT A NATION OF IMMIGRANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Eighty-five percent of U.S. citizens were born here.

CitizenJustice - I agree with you. I was just alluding more to the fact that the illegal alien advocates love to use the "nation of immigrants" argument for amnesty. They want it both ways - they want to claim we are a nation of immigrants AND they want socialist programs AND they want illegal aliens, who are not even immigrants, to be covered by these socialist programs.

Guess I should have more accurately put the "nation of immigrants" phrase in quotation marks, because that is always their claim. I personally am for a decrease, if not a moratorium, on even LEGAL immigration at this point, since the whole thing has gotten so out of hand.
