Language barrier keeps murder suspect from facing judge

    June 26, 2006, 03:04 PM

BRUNSWICK COUNTY -- A murder suspect is waiting to go in front of a judge in Brunswick County. The language barrier kept it from happening today.

The suspect, Jaime Alexandre Cruz, is from Honduras and cannot speak English.

Monday officials could not find a translator and that is the reason for the delay.

The Sheriff's Office says 22-year-old Cruz is in the country illegally. Investigators say he stabbed 27-year-old Jose Florino early Saturday morning in Leland.

According to investigators, Florino is also an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

    Both men had multiple names.

The wife of Florino said Cruz made unwanted advances towards her. That's when investigators say Cruz stabbed Florino.

He turned himself in a few hours later.

Jaime Cruz is still under no bond and is now expected to make his first appearance Tuesday morning with a translator.
