Language to Penalize Hiring Illegal Immigrants Omitted from Spending Bill

Apr 25, 2007

Helicopter Association International (HAI) reports a proposal that would penalize companies that have hired illegal immigrants was excluded from the fiscal 2007 emergency war-spending bill during conference. The language would have barred offending companies from receiving government contracts.

The language would have barred government contractors that employ illegal immigrants from receiving future contracts for 10 years. Companies not currently holding government contracts that are caught hiring illegal immigrants would have been barred from getting contracts for seven years. Contractors that voluntarily participate in verifying their employees’ status using a government database would have received a presumption of compliance.

A $2.10-an-hour minimum wage increase over two years and a tax package smaller than the one the Senate passed were included in the conference agreement on the $124.2 billion emergency-spending bill. President Bush is expected to veto the emergency- spending bill because of the date for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.
