DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO – Abel Moreno sat at a table yesterday at the National Council of La Raza convention, answering questions from a volunteer at a citizenship clinic.
Is his wife a U.S. citizen? Yes. How long have they been married? Thirteen years.

    NELVIN CEPEDA / Union-Tribune
Volunteer Maria Blanco helped fill out a citizenship application yesterday for Isaias Hernandez Duran (left), who was with his son, Esteban Duran.
Moreno, a maintenance engineer at a downtown hotel, became eligible for U.S. citizenship in 1998. But between work and raising two children, the legal permanent resident said he kept putting it off for “tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow.â€

She wants all the 'benefits of citizenship" at age 65...just in time to collect Social Security and Medicare!!!
    Excellent observation AmericanMe!

Also, this "citizenship drive" conducted by la raza should be absolutely illegal. Urban and city planners across this country account for a certain percentage of population increases when they develop their plans. As a result of those predictions, the appropriate number of, schools, hospitals, police and other emergency services are allocated or suggested to serve that particular community.

What these planners do not take into account is the unabated flow of illegal immigration and those groups like la raza who conduct ad hoc citizenship drives. Citizenship for people who have come through the back door and have not been accounted for is an absolute danger to those communities they reside in because of their uncalculated for status.

There is a reason why the Fed gov sets limits on the number of individuals which can legally emigrate to this country each year. The burden to infrastructure is one of them. Why should la raza be allowed to circumvent that process by encouraging and aiding those who have bypassed the legal process of entry? I don't get it...

This unaccounted burden on the infrastructure and emergency services puts all Americans at risk for potential failures when such services may be needed most.

    Excellent points, NoBueno!

I never thought of it that way...they ARE circumventing our immigration quotas (not that our government gives a hoot) and causing chaos and undue burdens on our communities.

In the article it states that the LaRaza volunteers are 'pre-screening applicants for 'criminal records' ! WHAT A JOKE! Who gave LaRaza the green light to do background checks????

Also, I getting so confused...how can they apply for citizenship if they don't have permanent legal status, such as a green card? Do these people all have legal residency??? It sounds like they are just IA's who have been squatting here for years!

We need to get on this...this is unconstitutional. LaRaza is not a governmental agency, and they can't be allowed to initiate citizenship procedures! They are using their own MALDEF and LULAC lawyers, which in of itself is corrupt!

La RAZA's volunteers cannot in any way do any kind of "criminal background" checks ....they aren't authorized nor have access to the security databases of USCIS.....most likely many of the applications will be eventually rejected anyway........

Legalatina is correct. Laraza are masters of misinformation. They tell the immigrants what they want to hear. They are collecting data to get themselves more federal money, that's all. They could care less that these people believe their lies and think they will become citizens because laraza says so!

They can help prospective citizens fill out the forms, that's all. What they are doing and what they are saying are not the same thing. They are deceiving the poor schmucks. The poor schmucks put themselves in a situation of believing everything laraza tells them, to their detriment.
