LAREDO, TEXAS - The currency interception occurred on Sunday, June 30, 2013 while CBP officers and Border Patrol agents conducting outbound (southbound) inspections at the Lincoln-Juarez international bridge came across a 2004 Ford F-250 pickup truck driven by a 37-year-old Mexican citizen from Chicago, Illinois.A CBP officer referred the driver and the truck for a secondary examination that resulted in the discovery and extraction of 144 bundles containing approximately $2,156,525.00 in unreported currency concealed within the vehicle.
CBP officers seized the unreported currency, and the Ford F-250 truck. The driver was arrested by CBP officers and turned over Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents for further investigation.
"This seizure is the result of the good work that CBP officers and agents are doing in the area of outbound to stop unreported currency from being exported without compliance with federal statutes.
This is the largest unreported currency seizure case that has been intercepted thus far this year," said Joe Uribe, Acting CBP Port Director, Laredo. "We are very proud of the work that CBP officers and agents continue to do every day in the deterrence of illicit activities and the stopping of this large amount of bulk currency from being illegally exported."
Individuals are permitted to carry any amount of currency or monetary instruments into or out of the U. S.; however, if the quantity is more than $10,000, they will need to report it to CBP.
"Money" means monetary instruments and includes U.S. or foreign coins currently in circulation, currency, traveler's checks in any form, money orders, and negotiable instruments or investment securities in bearer form.
Failure to declare may result in seizure of the currency and/or arrest.
