TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Consulates of nine Latin American countries are forming an alliance to improve the range of services they offer immigrant communities in New York and New Jersey.

Immigrants from participating countries will be able to find consular services and general information at a series of roving fairs to be held around the region. The first event will be held in Harrison, near Newark, this weekend.

Cesar Romero of the Mexican Consulate in New York says the alliance represents a departure from traditional diplomacy, and organizers hope to use the model nationwide.

The consul generals of Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay plan to announce the initiative Tuesday in New York City.
