Latin American Leaders React To Immigration Bill's Demise

Latin American Leaders React To Immigration Bill's Demise

June 30, 2007 11:03 a.m. EST

Christopher Rizo - AHN Staff Writer
Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Leaders in Latin America have expressed disappointment that the U.S. Senate was not able to approve an overhaul to the nation's immigration laws.

The Washington Post reported that Mexican President Felipe Calderón called it a "grave error" while Salavdoran President Elias Antonio Saca said it was a "pity" that the White House-backed plan was rejected after languishing for weeks amid concerns that the proposal would not do enough to protect the nation's borders.

After years of hoping that Washington would pass a comprehensive immigration bill, the leaders' hopes were all but dashed. They had hoped that Congress would approve a reform package that would establish a guest-worker program and give an estimated 12 million immigrants in the country illegally a path to citizenship.

In an editorial published Friday in Mexico City's El Universal, the newspaper said it is "highly hypocritical that the United States admits migrants as peasants, but does not accept them as citizens."

The paper blamed equally Mexico for not generating jobs so millions didn't have to flea north.

Meanwhile, President Saca, in El Salvador, said, "I lament what happened in the Senate. I hope that the senators consider this well, because there are 12 million people [in the United States] who are undocumented."

"What a pity, what a pity, but those are decisions of the legislators," Saca told reporters.

And, in Guatemala, newspaper Prensa Libre described the Senate vote as "deplorable." The vote, the paper said, was evidence that the United States is "a country hostile toward immigrants."

"Little by little, the number of people who lose their appreciation of [the United States] will grow," the paper said. "With what happened yesterday, everyone loses, sooner rather than later, and there are fewer possibilities of healing that wound."

Think of it as a man who is a drunk, addict and a criminal who has a houseful of childen and spends everything on himself. Then he gets mad because the neighbors are sick and tired of taking care of his kids and told them to go home.

Give me a break! Latin Americans do so much "soul searching" about the United States but do little to improve their own countries. It is not the fault of the US! Go peddle your self-pity somewhere else...

"The Government's human rights record was poor; although there were improvements in some areas, serious abuses persisted. There were credible reports of killings by individuals linked to security forces and of politically motivated killings by nonstate actors. There were reports of violent deaths, killings, and "social cleansing" in which persons deemed socially undesirable (for example, gang members, local delinquents, street children, prostitutes, and homosexuals) were killed by unknown assailants. There were no reports of politically motivated disappearances. The Constitutional Court confirmed the 2001 conviction of three former military members and one priest for the 1998 killing of Bishop Gerardi. An appeals court overturned the 2002 conviction of Juan Valencia Osorio for the 1990 murder of anthropologist Myrna Mack Chang. In October, the President completed the disbanding of the Presidential Military Staff (EMP).

There were credible reports of individual police officers' involvement in kidnappings. Security forces tortured, abused, and mistreated suspects and detainees. Prison conditions remained harsh. In most cases, the prosecutorial and judicial systems did not ensure full and timely investigations, fair trials, or due process. Arbitrary arrest and lengthy pretrial detentions were problems. Judges and other law enforcement officials were subjected to intimidation and corruption. Impunity was pervasive, although efforts to reform the judiciary continued. There were reports that private communications were monitored. Members of the media were targets of attacks, threats, and intimidation. Attacks on nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and human rights workers by unidentified persons decreased during the year. Violence and discrimination against women persisted, as did societal abuse of children and discrimination against persons with disabilities and indigenous people, which the Government took some steps to address. There were reports of retaliation by employers against workers who sought to form unions and participate in union activities, and the Government did not effectively enforce laws to protect workers who exercised their rights. There was widespread employment of minors in the informal sector. Trafficking in women and children was a problem."

They NEED to get the message that we are HOSTILE to ILLEGAL aliens! As Jeff Sessions said, we need to let people know that the border is closed and don't bother coming. The reason they take the risks is that they know they have LITTLE chance of being caught. THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE!

Propaganda.....
Never look at another flag. Remember, that behind Government, there is your country, and that you belong to her as you do belong to your own mother. Stand by her as you would stand by your own mother

Amen!

We allow over 2.8 million LEGAL immigrants a year. If we didn't like LEGAL immigrants, that would NOT be the case.

ILLEGAL does NOT equal LEGAL.
TIME'S UP!
**********
Why should only AMERICAN CITIZENS and LEGAL immigrants, have to obey the law?!
