Drug lords fighting for U.S. access

Drug lords fighting for U.S. access
    Chad Groening - OneNewsNow - 6/9/2008 11:00:00 AM

Immigration reform activist Susan Tully isn't surprised by recent reports that a Mexican city rampant with drug gangs has seen two more police officers killed – a husband and wife.

The couple was shot to death while leaving their home in Ciudad Juarez, which sits right across the border from El Paso, Texas. The area – home of the powerful Juarez drug cartel – has seen more than a dozen officers killed this year, and over 200 people total.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon has deployed 25,000 troops across the country to respond to the problem. More than 450 police, soldiers, prosecutors or investigators have been killed since he took office in 2006 – others have resigned in fear.

Susan Tully with the Federation for American Immigration Reform says it is unfortunate that the pay for police officers and military personnel does not balance the risk. "And frankly, they're not willing to put their life on the line for the most part against the drug cartel," she adds.

Tully says Americans should be very concerned about what is going on in Juarez and other border towns. She says the root of so much violence is gangs that are jockeying for access control into the U.S.

The legal immigration advocate says about 90 percent of all the illegal drugs brought into the U.S. come through Mexico. And she says the income the cartels receive from drug trafficking in the United States is about three times Mexico's petroleum export revenues.

No lie. So much for the "war on drugs".
Heck this WAR has been going on since I was a kid and it's easier than ever to get drugs.

    Headline: "Mexican narco invades U.S."
A report dated 4/11/08 by the National Drug Intelligence Center of the U.S. Dep't. of Justice says that the Mexican drug cartels have not only been able to control almost all of their country of origin but now they also control the links for the flow of narcotics in 195 cities of the 50 states of the U.S. According to the report, 80% of drug consumption in the U.S. is provided by these cartels.

The ONLY way to stop this is to legalize, tax and control the drugs. Hit em where it hurts the most, in the pocket. Anyone who wants drugs now can get them anyway, the only difference is the price. If the bottom drops on the prices, the drug cartels will no longer be making millions and killing people.

I know it's not a popular option, but everything else has been tried and failed, why not try something else?

Popular solution or not Miguelina, I must say that I agree with you. And you're right, everything else has been tried and failed so it may be time to try something else.

Unless the rug is pulled right out from under these cartels and others making the huge profits of illegal drugs worth the violence, it's going to continue and we have to face the fact that this is getting uglier everyday.

If we think the violence in this country is bad enough now, we need to stop and think how long it will be before we have a situation as bad, if not far worse, than what we've seen in Latin America forever and are seeing in Mexico right now.

I agree as well. They have done studies in other countries and all heck didn't break loose and suddenly turn into a country of druggies. Ya, they had a temporary surge, but as with anything new, people might try it that never may have otherwise....but it leveled out. Alcohol and cigarettes are legal and everyone isn't drunk and smoking. Any addict knows the drug of choice is only the symptom of a greater problem and they will go to any length possible to get it. It's definately a slippery slope for sure with lots of mixed feelings.....but this way isn't working either and never has. As long as it's more profitable to grow drugs than food.....we will have drugs. It pays more to feed the addict than it is a starving person. Sad but true. Heck we've burned poppy fields and pot fields and they just start all over. We've done 0 tolerance and I think more young lives have been ruined with that than if it were legal. There's always going to users and abusers out there.....legal or not....but it's a shame to see the dealers profit in such huge amounts at the peril of some. People are drawn to what they can't have. I remember parents not letting their kids have sugar.....I mean to the point of not letting Grandma and Grandpa see them if they gave them a cookie. Didn't let them go to birthday parties if they were serving cake. Those kids, as soon as they got old enough to get it themselves.....just gorged themselves on sugar. They didn't learn why too much wasn't good, they never learned self-control or moderation, or anything. They have done the trans fat thing......we all suffer because a few can't control themselves. I can't have my rare treat of Kentucky Fried Chicken because someone has to eat the whole bucket.
Now Kentucky Fried has lost my business and the bucket eater makes it at home with trans fat. It just encourages blaming other things instead of the route of personal responsibility for your own actions. I know now they are re-doing the guilt of having grandma and grandpa being the new drug dealer for our youth because of whats in the medicine chest. We went through a long period of people suffering needlessly because of the "addiction" issue. Grandpa is dying in pain, suffering needlessly because "kids" could use those drugs to get high on or he "might" get addicted. Me having to sign for allergy pills hasn't stopped meth use....just made my life more complicated and gave the government my name and such to monitor me, but nothing for the drug user or the real dealers. They'll bust a kid for a joint yet look the other way while pounds get over the border effortlessly. It doesn't work this way. Doesn't work when you can make more money dealing drugs than doing a honest days work. Why live an honest life when corruption pays so much better?
