Videos of people singing the French national anthem La Marsaillaise are being shared on social media to show solidarity with France in the wake of a terror attack in Nice which killed over 80 – including 10 children.

The song, which was adopted by French revolutionaries, is regularly sung on Bastille Day. Now people online are sharing it as a show of unity with France.

People in the US in particular have shared videos of themselves singing La Marsaillaise. Bastille Day is widely-celebrated in America, with over 50 cities marking the day.

From New York city, to Houston, and San Francisco to New Orleans, people at French embassies and at Bastille Day events sung poignant renditions of the French national anthem as the news of the terror attack in Nice broke.

    Guillaume Gauthereau
, who shared a video of himself and others singing La Marsaillaise, was at the French consulate in New York city when the attack happened.

He shared the video on Facebook, writing:

"As I was at the French consulate this evening to celebrate our national day and our values, Liberty, Equality, Fraternity AND Freedom, a man took the lives of almost 80 people in France who gathered to enjoy the celebration."

He added: "My heart is sad to witness another violent crime."

In Houston, Marc Sofia uploaded a video of a "poignant" rendition of the French anthem, writing "After horrific #Nice events, poignant #Marseillaise at #BastilleDay hosted by #France Consulate #Houston."

While in New Orleans, photographer Matthew Hinton shared his videoof La Marsaillaise he had recorded at a Bastille Day event earlier that day with the hashtag #PrayForNice.

Reporter Melanie Woodrow was at the French consulate in San Francisco, where an impromptu vigil was being held. She captured the moment those outside sang a subdued version of the French anthem.

Since the attacks, which killed over 80 people, social media users have also been sharing this clip from the 1942 film Casablanca as a way to pay tribute to those affected by the terror attack at Bastille Day celebrations in Nice.
