Legal fight begins over Arizona immigration law

PHOENIX -- Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer vowed to appeal a federal judge’s ruling Wednesday that barred the state from enforcing key provisions of its controversial immigration law, setting the stage for what is expected to be a prolonged legal battle.

A day before the law was set to be enforced, U.S. District Court Judge Susan Bolton put on hold a provision that required officers to check a person’s immigration status while enforcing other laws. Bolton, appointed by former President Bill Clinton, also delayed enforcement of sections of the law that would require immigrants to carry their papers at all times, and one that prohibited undocumented workers from soliciting employment in public places.

She wrote in her 36-page decision that Arizona’s law would have hampered the federal government’s immigration enforcement efforts.

“The federal government’s ability to enforce its policies and achieve its objectives will be undermined by the state’s enforcement of statutes that interfere with federal law,â€
