Catholics reiterate opposition to English-only ordinances

As ordinances and resolutions making English the official language of local governments spread through Frederick County, the regional Catholic Church is reiterating its opposition to them.

The Archdiocese of Baltimore on Wednesday reissued statements from March and November in which the Catholic Church opposed bills that would make English the official language.

‘‘[b]Legislation formally recognizing English as our official language will not encourage more people to learn the language. It will only send the message that immigrants are unwelcome in Maryland,â€
