LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Chanting, holding signs and waving American and Mexican flags, hundreds of Hispanics rallied downtown Tuesday to call for immigration reform.

Many of the marchers outside the Gene Snyder Federal Courthouse clutched homemade signs opposing a bill passed by the U.S. House in December that would make illegal immigrants criminal felons.

Get ready for Broadway driving passes

06:25 PM EDT on Monday, April 17, 2006

That pass isn't to cruise. It will be for people who have legitimate reasons to be on Broadway come Derby time.

So who needs a pass and how do you get them? And what happens to anyone who is still tempted to cruise?

It's your first look at the police-issued pass you'll need to travel on Broadway on Derby weekend -- the newest initiative by Metro Police to end Derby cruising.

The traffic nightmare of Derby cruising that has shut businesses off from their customers, left homeowners trapped and is blamed for tons of litter, lewd acts and last year a death. From Friday morning Derby weekend thru Sunday night, there'll be no stopping or parking along most of Broadway.

“It’ll be the length of Broadway. From Barret until up to the parks. We will be patrolling every inch of that. There are 450+ officers who will be detailed to this general area,” says Major Bill Weedman of Metro Police.

At Blades ‘n Shades on East Broadway, a shop that carries some of the fancy rims and wheels that cruisers adore, they've got mixed feelings about the tactic but plan to get passes for all their employees.

“We’ll definitely need these,” says Josh Paige. “We’ll be open Derby weekend. As far as them shutting the street down, I don’t know how business is going to be going, but we will be here.”

Those ignoring the rule face tickets to the tune of $100 dollars or more.

This Tuesday, police say they’ll go to each business and residence on Broadway to provide them with passes, and they'll be available at every police station.
