It's not about hate; it's about the law
Aug 18 2007
Every story has two sides to it. The hot story in Danbury over the last few years has been the debate/argument concerning "immigrants" or "illegal aliens."
This week's News-Times brings these sides together in the span of two editions. On Monday, it was the report of the rally in support of keeping these families together, complete with the "We can't all hate each other" headline.
There was an accompanying photo of a person holding a sign -- "ICE you are destroying the American Dream."
Very heady and emotional stuff. In trying to pull at the reader's heartstrings, we hear about a 17-year-old who is separated from her family.
Granted, that must be painful. I cannot begin to know. But the question begs to be asked: Didn't the family know that was a possibility the moment they stayed beyond their visa? Don't people who cross the border illegally know that the possibility exists that they will be returned if found?
The clergy there showing their support must have forgotten the Bible passage that reminds us to "render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's." In other words, we are bound to obey secular law!
Tuesday's paper showed the other side of the story. Two men, here illegally, were arrested in separate stops for DUI and driving without a license. If they ran down an innocent bystander, where is the recourse?
These issues, as well as the overcrowding of the schools, the strain on the medical services and illegal housing all need to be addressed. Unfortunately, if you speak out against the issue you are thought to be heartless.
Let's remove as much of the emotion from the issue as we can and try to resolve the legal implications first. It's not about hate, it's about the law.

Illegal immigrants should go home
Aug 18 2007
The Aug. 13 headline, "We can't all hate each other" and the accompanying article were so inappropriate that they require a response.
The article reflected biased opinion and incorrect interpretation of facts. There is no "hate," just a demand that the laws be obeyed.
The person in the photograph that displayed the sign "ICE you are destroying the American Dream" is the one that requires sensitivity training. Her feelings must not be interpreted as if she's right on the law.
The people who entered the United States without the proper documentation are here illegally and ICE is doing its job as mandated by the laws of this great land. Therefore, the illegals have a choice, either find a way back to where they came from or face the consequences without any hope of amnesty.
Reporting the idiotic message of Angel Curillo makes The News-Times look as ignorant as him. If you follow his line of thinking, anyone, anywhere, could claim to be an Earth-being and do whatever he or she wished.
Just imagine a world where all countries on Earth did not have borders and laws. What laws would Mr. Curillo follow when facing an injustice? My guess is that he'll invent his own and call them God's laws.
As far as the support offered to the illegals by the "organized churches" in town, I wonder aloud: Are you doing this to support (and not your desire to subjugate) the less fortunate and, as reported, assure that they are treated with respect?
Why not first ask the illegals to treat us with the respect we deserve by obeying the law and returning to their homeland before their visa expires? That's what a law-abiding and respectful person would do.

Headline drives wedge in community
Aug 18 2007
"We can't all hate each other" is a headline that has only succeeded in driving a bigger wedge into the community.
This Aug. 13 headline implies that Americans hate immigrants. I thought the goal of this vigil was to help bring dignity and respect to area immigrants.
The News-Times was truly irresponsible and instilled more insecurities into area residents by using this man's quote for a headline.
Americans don't hate immigrants, legal or not. Americans want what is fair for one to be fair for all. For you to have this as a headline, just angers all. Good going!

Racism, immigration shouldn't be linked
Aug 17 2007
In Monday's front-page story headlined "We can't all hate each other," readers learn that "blatant racism" is in some way associated with support for U.S. immigration officials who deport illegal immigrants.
This is part of a growing trend to inject "race" and "racism" into the debate over illegal immigrants. Should illegal immigrants be playing the race card?
African-Americans were brought here in chains to be enslaved to enrich others. Then, after manumission, they were denied rights and opportunities because of their race.
Illegal immigrants freely and voluntarily defied our legal borders to seek paid employment. When their supporters cry "racism," they cloud the issue and trivialize the black civil rights movement.

Illegal immigrants should have no rights
Aug 17 2007
In response to Dr. Edward J. Volpintesta (letter, Aug. :
Let's look at the problem with the real facts. We have never had the problem that we have now. The true fact is that the illegal immigrants fill hospital emergency rooms with every little thing and then they get everything free.
The American people once again get pushed behind. It's time for Americans to start getting better treatment. The illegal immigrants do not belong here. I hope people understand what illegal means.
If they want to come here, they should come here the legal way, like my family had to. They should not have any rights here, and the people who are helping them should be ashamed of themselves.

Thank God there are so many people that haven't swallowed the BS they keep raming down our throats. Any person with a basic sense of logic and an ounce of common sense sees this scam for what it is.
