Wife of Mexican president speaks to Clinton school students

LITTLE ROCK - The wife of Mexican president Vicente Fox spoke to students at the Clinton School for Public Service on Monday to highlight opportunities for women in Mexico, but did not mention immigration issues to the class.
The visit by Marta Sahagun, married to Fox since 2001, came on the same day that rallies and boycotts were held throughout the United States in support of less-restrictive immigration laws.
"She talked about her efforts to improve opportunities for women in Mexico over the last six years of her husband's administration," said student John Spears, 29. "She talked about health care, human rights and education and she noted that the poverty rate dropped 30 percent in Mexico over the last six years."
Reporters were not allowed in the classroom, on the campus of Bill Clinton's presidential library.
Sahagun gave the class an opening statement in Spanish, and the students listened to an English interpretation over headphones. She then held a question-and-answer session in English before going next door to tour the library itself.
Earlier Monday, a group of 14 Mexican immigrants now living in Jonesboro toured the library and planned to take part in immigration demonstrations planned for later in the day. Tomasa Romero, 57, said she hoped Sahagun would support her and other immigrants.
Romero, a recent immigrant, said Fox hadn't been effective in getting immigration reform to benefit Mexicans.
"When he entered the presidency, he made a lot of promises for the Mexican people, but now the people feel frustrated," she said.
