New Medical Center Planned For Immigrant, Refugee Community
Medical Center To Be Built In City Heights

SAN DIEGO -- A nonprofit that provides help to the uninsured immigrant and refugee community in San Diego plans to build a $15 million medical center in City Heights, it was reported Tuesday.

Medical clinic La Maestra, which offers aid in Spanish, Somali and 17 other languages, has been operating out of ramshackle City Heights bungalows along Fairmount Avenue since 1990, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Funding for the new 30,000-square-foot facility, also on Fairmount Avenue, is coming from a $6 million private bond and about $4 million in privately donated money, the Union-Tribune reported.

The charity still needs to raise at least $5 million, but it expects to break ground in May and open in December 2008, according to the newspaper.

As many as 98 percent of La Maestra's clients are uninsured and receive low-cost care. The nonprofit offers services that include immunizations, cancer screening and mental health counseling.

I don't know about complete funding for the clinic, but the taxpayers (at least partially) will probably be paying for the care of those 98% uninsured clients that are reportedly utilizing the clinic. Without some state or federal assistance, I doubt such a clinic can stay solvent.

Sounds like it could be for hispanics only..which is discrimination against the rest of us..let's hope not, especially if taxpayer dollars help build and maintain this thing in any way.

Something smells about this. Can't see how this place can make a profit even if and when it is built.

Well, if it is for 'immigrants' and 'America is a nation of immigrants' then I guess our uninsured and down-and-out folks can use it too?????? What would happen if a bunch of American 'immigrants' showed up and demanded services, I wonder?

Great I sugest even those who have insurance, pretend not to have and go there. If they can go to ours hospitals and cannot be dennied treatment, and have no money to pay why can't we do the same thing?
I think no documente should be presented and also a fake name....and...voila we have free health care.Just like they do.
