A Phoenix woman was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison Monday for conspiracy to transport an illegal immigrant for profit, a spokeswoman for the Office of the U.S. Attorney said.

The woman, Sassandra Guadalupe Moreno, 33, a U.S. citizen, submitted her son's papers to U.S. Customs officials when she escorted a 4-year-old Mexican boy through the pedestrian lane at the Nogales Port of Entry on April 30, spokeswoman Sandy Raynor said.

At the secondary inspection station, she said the boy was her cousin's son, then admitted that she did not know the boy or his parents, Raynor said.
Moreno said she was going to be paid $200 to take the boy to Phoenix, Raynor said.

It's unclear who was going to pay Moreno, she said.
Raynor said the boy was turned over to the Mexican Consulate and reunited with his family in Mexico.

Moreno pleaded guilty in June in U.S. District Court in Tucson.
