Illegal entrant could face 24 years

(P.S. The only reason for this long a sentence is because the prosecution is being done by the local County atty and not the Feds. The Feds would probably say a 3 year sentence.)

Illegal entrant could face 24 years

    ARIZONA DAILY STAR
An illegal entrant could spend the next 24 years in prison after being convicted Friday of hitting a police officer with a car during a chase last August.
A Pima County jury found Marcelo Perez Munguia, 23, guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and fleeing from a law enforcement officer, but it acquitted him on four other charges, including driving while under the influence of marijuana and resisting arrest.
Munguia is facing seven to 21 years on the assault charge and one to 3.75 years on the other charge, said Deputy Pima County Attorney Bruce Chalk.
Tucson police Officer Tom Hoffman tried to pull Munguia over on Aug. 21, 2006, when he spotted him driving without headlights, Chalk said.
Munguia refused to pull over and fled, Chalk said.
When Hoffman cornered Munguia near Park Avenue and East Park Estates Circle, Munguia backed up and struck Hoffman, Chalk said.
Police arrested Munguia after tracking him down at a house in the 800 block of West Calle Francita, near Mission Manor Park.
Judge Edgar Acuña is scheduled to sentence Munguia on July 3.
At the time of the incident, Munguia was wanted by Gila County authorities in connection with an aggravated assault, Chalk said. He also has a prior burglary-related conviction.

Makes you wonder if he would have passed his 24 hour background check as per the senates imigration bill.
