WASHINGTON – Sen. Trent Lott was successful in his efforts on behalf of a controversial immigration bill today as senators voted 64-35 to move the legislation forward.

Lott, a Mississippi Republican, said he would help GOP leaders and the White House round up Republican votes for the measure after a test vote for the bill earlier this month failed.

Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss, was one GOP senator Lott failed to reach. Cochran voted against allowing the bill to move forward.

Many view today's vote as an indication the Senate will approve the bill when a final vote is held later this week.

But Lott, who has received criticism in Mississippi and on national talk shows for his role in the immigration debates, said last weekend he’s not sure he’ll vote for a final bill because “the wheels could come offâ€
