Lou Dobbs Tonight
Tuesday, September 23, 2008

Tonight, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is asking Congress
for authority to buy failing mortgages and other financial
instruments from weakened banks. The goal is to stabilize
financial institutions.

But what do the taxpayers get out for their $700 billion? The
plan benefits exorbitantly wealthy Wall Street moguls while
doing nothing for the average American. We’ll have that story.
Plus:

* Banks are sending out the big lobbying guns to squeeze even
more concessions from Washington and the taxpayer. The
Financial Services Roundtable, which represents greedy
mega-banks, has convinced Treasury to amend its original
legislative proposal. Instead of buying only troubled mortgage
assets, Treasury would now be able to swoop in and buy any
troubled asset that the banks are holding.

* Lawmakers have challenged credit card companies this year for
their questionable practices towards consumers. However, our
do-nothing Congress has yet to pass a single piece of
legislation to actually address the issues. Today the House is
set to once again consider a Credit Cardholders’ Bill of
Rights. But the Senate and the president do not support this
legislation.

* The survival of E-Verify rests in the hands of the Senate
this week. The House has already voted to reauthorize the
program for another five years, but now it’s being held up by
partisan bickering in the Senate. The program will expire
November 30 if Congress does not act swiftly.
