Lou Dobbs Tonight
Friday, September 12, 2008

It’s the final day of Lou Dobbs’s Independent Convention. All
this week, we’ve been focusing on the issues ignored by the
major party candidates—the issues that matter to ordinary
Americans. Tonight, we’ll wrap up the week, with a focus on
perhaps the greatest failure of our government in a
generation—the failure to provide that great equalizer of a
high-quality education to every single American child.

Here are some of the stories we’ll be reporting on:

* Half of all Latino and black students never make it through
high school. And a third of all high school students never earn
their degree. Of those that do, most will not go to college.
American education is failing its students. In a world that
increasingly demands the skills that education can offer, what
are the presidential candidates saying about the state
America’s educational system and how are they going to address
its shortfalls?

* Independent voters in Arizona have approved several policy
changes to crack down on illegal immigration in recent year—and
they appear to be working. From a state law which revokes the
licenses of employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens, to a
recently upheld law requiring proof of citizenship to vote, the
state has been a leader in picking up the federal government’s
slack when it comes to our broken borders. We’ll talk to
Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas about going after
illegal employers and look at the lessons that can be learned
from Arizona’s tough stance.

Lou’s nationally-syndicated talk radio show, The Lou Dobbs
Show, debuted this spring. Join us weekdays from 3-6 p.m.

Today, Jonah Goldberg of National Review Online will tell Lou
what he thinks about the latest political news and poll
numbers—and if Governor Sarah Palin holds the key to the GOP’s
Election Day engine. Keith Richburg, New York bureau chief for
the Washington Post, will also weigh in all things political.
Peter Wallison of the American Enterprise Institute will
discuss the federal government’s bailout of mortgage giants
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. And as always, Lou will be taking
your calls to discuss the issues that matter most to you. Call
him at 877-55 DOBBS.
