Love Sees No Borders Decries Vandalism in Its Name
    02.01.06

(Sunnyvale, CA) – Love Sees No Borders announced its opposition to the vandalism of the home of a Minutemen organizer in Virginia. The organization’s logo was drawn on a sidewalk to protest Minutemen activities in the region, an act of vandalism that the organization strongly opposes.

George Taplin, a resident of Herndon, Va., is an organizer of a local Minutemen group. On Sunday he noticed that the sidewalk of his home was painted with graffiti containing the words “no one is illegalâ€

Yup, you got it. So now we are not only being over run by illegal aliens invading, but gay ones as well. How long before they ask for special rights and asylum, complaining how they will be treated harshly if they return to their own countries. Well, at least they can't crank out a bunch of anchor babies.

    Gay group disavows vandalism
    Name, logo spray-painted at
    Va. home of anti-immigrant leader
By LOU CHIBBARO JR. | Feb 9, 9:20 AM

A group that advocates for gay immigrants in the U.S. announced its strong opposition to the unauthorized use of its name and logo in graffiti that someone spray-painted on a sidewalk outside the home of an anti-immigrant leader in Herndon, Va.

The group Love Sees No Borders said it played no role in a Jan. 31 graffiti incident outside the home of George Taplin, head of the Northern Virginia chapter of the Minuteman Project, a national organization that attempts to prevent illegal immigrants from entering or remaining in the U.S.
Leslie Bulbuk, co-founder of Love Sees No Borders, learned from media reports that the graffiti included her group's name along with its logo, which consists of a drawing of the North and South American continents inside a heart.

"We understand the frustration felt by many LGBT immigrants and their families because of the unique challenges they face," Bulbuk said in a statement. "But we do not condone this act of graffiti as a means of opposing an anti-immigrant organization, especially when done in our name and without our approval."

Bulbuk and lesbian activist Marta Donayre formed Love Sees No Borders in 2001 to "advocate on behalf of bi-national same-sex couples trying to live in the United States," according to information posted on the group's website. A bi-national couple is one in which one partner is American and the other is not.

Among other things, the group promotes efforts to pass the Uniting American Families Act, previously known as the Permanent Partners Immigration Act, a bill pending in Congress that would allow foreigners who are domestic partners of U.S. citizens to become permanent residents eligible for American citizenship.

The legislation would provide the foreign partners in same-sex relationships with the same automatic citizenship rights granted to heterosexual foreigners who marry U.S. citizens.

The bill has 91 co-sponsors in the House and 10 co-sponsors in the Senate. Capitol Hill observers say the bill has little chance of passing under the current Republican-controlled Congress.

Taplin formed the Herndon chapter of the Minuteman Project last October in response to the town's decision to open a day-laborer center where contractors seek out workers for construction-related jobs. Volunteer members of the chapter photograph and videotape contractors who approached the laborers, whom they claim are mostly undocumented immigrants.
Taplin did not return calls or e-mails from the Blade seeking comment.

    No suspects or leads

The Washington Times reported that the group has turned over the names of at least 16 contractors to federal immigration officials, alleging the firms violated federal laws barring the hiring of undocumented workers.

Members of other Minuteman Project chapters located near the U.S.-Mexican border are patrolling the border to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the country, according to the Minuteman Project website. Some of the volunteers are said to be armed and use sophisticated hunting equipment to track down illegal crossings into the U.S.

Herndon Police spokesperson Sgt. Darcy Burns said there are no suspects or leads in the investigation into the Jan. 29 graffiti incident. Burns said she was not aware that the words "Love Sees No Borders" and the heart symbol depicted in the graffiti were the name and logo of a gay immigration rights group.

She said police classified the incident as a destruction of property offense, which is a Class 1 misdemeanor that carries a maximum sentence of 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine.

Burns said police do not consider the offense a hate crime because it was not motivated by race or religious views and did not involve trespassing on Taplin's property.

She said she did not know whether police investigators plan to talk to Love Sees No Borders members to determine if anyone associated with the group has been involved with an informal Herndon group that has rallied in support of the day laborers.
