LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A Lubbock Police Captain is still in the hospital, and an illegal immigrant is behind bars accused of the hit and run that put him there.

Wednesday is the second night Captain Neil Brumley will spend at UMC. He is in stable but critical condition, and could face a very difficult recovery ahead.

Tuesday afternoon Brumley went on a bike ride in Lynn County on FM 1730 near New Home, but before he could make it back he was hit from behind by a Dodge car. "It's a situation where he was badly injured and the family doesn't want to go in depth into the extent of his injuries," said Lubbock Police Captain Greg Stevens.

Brumley was rushed to UMC by AeroCare, as DPS troopers tried to find out what happened. "He has a very long recovery process ahead of him," said Stevens.

Investigators located the dodge car, but no driver. Not until later Tuesday evening. That's when 34-year-old Florencio Corredor turned himself into the Hockley County Sheriff's Office.

Corredor was booked for not stopping and getting help after the accident. The Hockley County Sheriff's office also tells us Corredor is an illegal immigrant.

While Corredor sits behind bars, Brumley's fellow officers and family have remained by his side. "It's not likely to change anytime soon so give it a little bit of time and as he progresses and as he recovers hopefully the family will be able to put more information out through a spokesperson in the future," said Stevens.

As the journey to healing begins, loved ones are thankful to be surrounded by many thoughts and prayers. "They want to put out the message that they greatly appreciate as does the police department the outpouring of care and concern that the community has shown," said Stevens.

DPS troopers transported Corredor from Hockley County to Lynn County Wednesday afternoon. He is currently in the Lynn County jail, waiting to be arraigned which could be Thursday.
