IRVINE — Less than a week after an immigration reform bill cleared the Senate, Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, urged Hispanic business and civic leaders in Orange County to throw their weight behind the proposal and urge opponents to climb aboard.

McCain, co-sponsor of the Senate-passed bill, said the coming weeks could prove critical as the Senate and House join together in a committee to hammer out differences between their proposals.

"The main reason why I’m here is to urge you to be heavily involved in this issue because what happens in the next weeks, perhaps months but very likely weeks, will determine not just the issue of immigration in America, but in my view, define what America is all about," McCain told nearly 350 county residents who ranged from attorneys to elected officials to entrepreneurs.

The event today at the Hyatt Regency Irvine was organized by the Hispanic 100, a group of county business leaders.

McCain talked about the strength and vitality that America has received from its immigrant heritage and the tragic deaths of migrants struggling to cross the border with Mexico on foot.

He underscored the need for companies to hire legal, documented workers or face fines, like those proposed in the Senate bill.
