U.S. Border Patrol agents seized more than four tons of marijuana in a series of events in the western portion of the Rio Grande Valley this week.

A Border Patrol press release stated agents at the McAllen station saw several individuals wading in the waters of a settling basin in Hidalgo early Thursday morning.

A helicopter arrived soon after and helped apprehend the five suspects, including two juveniles and three adult men. Agents found sugar sacks stuffed with marijuana near the group, all of whom admitted to being Mexican citizens in the United States illegally.

Border Patrol agents also found $1 million worth of the drug in an abandoned home near Rio Grande City on Wednesday.

Starr County sheriff’s deputies and K-9 units helped find the shed behind the house where the marijuana was stashed.

In 15 separate incidents – from McAllen to west of Rio Grande City – agents seized more than 8,000 pounds of narcotics that carried a street value of more than $6.5 million.
