MILFORD — A Milford man was arrested early yesterday morning on South Bow Street after he was found driving without a license and intoxicated, police say. Now he may be in trouble with immigration.

Tigoberto Orellano-Alonso, 25, of 9 Goodrich Court, a native of Mexico, was arraigned yesterday at Milford District Court. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without a license.

Orellano-Alonso had given police the name Jose Mainato, which turned out to be fake, police said.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency said it ran his fingerprints and got a hit, identifying him as Orellano-Alonso, who had been previously deported from the United States in 2002.

According to a law enforcement official, in 2002 “he was encountered in Arizona by border patrol after crossing the border illegally.”
ICE has lodged a detainer warrant on him. After local charges are adjudicated, he will be turned over to ICE and placed in removal proceedings.

According to police, Orellano-Alonso, who was visibly drunk, showed an Oregon driver’s license. But he has been living in Massachusetts for the past five years and has never obtained a state license.

According to a police report, Orellano-Alonso was seen driving erratically in a green Mazda sedan on Franklin Street turning onto Grove Street.
The report said Orellano-Alonso did not stop immediately for police and failed to put the car into park when asked by an officer. A half-full 24-ounce can of Coors Light beer was seen in his center console.

Police say Orellano-Alonso failed the field sobriety tests but refused to take a Breathalyzer test. According to the report his speech was slurred.

Illegal immigration has been under the microscope in the town after an illegal immigrant was accused of killing a 23-year-old Milford man last August in a car crash.

Lt. James Falvey of the Milford Police Department said the department “runs into illegal immigrants on a daily basis.”

“A lot of the time the officers encounter a lot of difficulty identifying the illegal immigrants because they don’t have an identification on them,” said Falvey. “If they give you false information, you can’t classify it till later on.”

Orellano-Alonso’s next court date is scheduled for June 14 at Milford District Court.
