SPRING VALLEY - Convicted criminals performing community service rather than going to jail were brought in over the weekend to resume work at a village urban renewal site, replacing undocumented workers who were illegally hired last week.

The men worked on Saturday and Sunday at a building the village is acquiring at 65A N. Main St. The crews cleaned out seven large trash containers' worth of unusable office furniture, Walter Booker, the village's assistant building inspector, said yesterday.

The work crews were given full protective gear, he said. Some of the undocumented workers last week told The Journal News that there was dark, foul-smelling water in the basement that they feared might make them sick.
