KOTA KINABALU, Fri.:

A total of 1,663 illegal immigrants in Sabah have been detained for non-possession of travel documents and valid personal documents in an operation to weed out illegals from Aug 7-Sept 24.

State Secretary Datuk Sukarti Wakiman who led the operation said of the 22,033 people who were checked, most of them were Filipinos and Indonesians.

The operation would be continue until after Aidilfitri.

He said 55,030 illegal foreign workers in Sabah had registered with the Immigration Department.

Of the number, 41,899 were Indonesians while Filipinos made up the rest.

Sukarti said the large scale operation made employers who hired workers illegally wary of the need to register them in line with the three-month period given by immigration department.

He urged employers to register their foreign workers by Oct 30 to avoid prosecution.
