A 44-year-old man was arrested Tuesday on charges that he killed his cellmate in a fight, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said.

Deputies were serving dinner to the man's cell at around 3:40 p.m. on the eighth floor of the main jail when they found the man lying unresponsive in his cell, according to sheriff's officials.

After an investigating, sheriff's detectives believe the man's cellmate, Richard Harden, dealt the 23-year-old man his fatal injuries in a fight earlier that day, said sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran.

Harden was re-booked into the jail on murder charges, sheriff's officials said. He had been in custody since being arrested Monday on assault with a deadly weapon charges.

The deceased inmate had also been in jail since Monday, sheriff's officials said. He had been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and was being kept on a hold of the United States Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, sheriff's officials said.

The man's identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, Curran said.
