Man arrested at border in 1994 homicide

Border patrol agents arrested a man wanted in a 1994 Austin homicide, police said Friday.

A murder warrant was issued November 21, 1994 for Jose Luis Vences-Maldonado. Investigators say he shot and killed Fabian Ponce on Westheimer in Northeast Austin.

Nearly 13 years later, McAllen Border patrol agents were interviewing several people at the La Joya Police Department for possible immigration violations and found one person -- who identified himself as a Mexican citizen -- as illegal.

His fingerprints were taken, and records showed Vences-Maldonado had an outstanding warrant.

Vences-Maldonado was arrested Tuesday and was set to be extradited to Travis County.
