NOGALES, AZ - A man wanted for murder in Mexico was turned over to law enforcement authorities in the country at the Nogales port of entry on Jan. 31 under the Alliance to Combat Transnational Threats’ Mexican Fugitive Removal Program, officials say.

A warrant was issued in May 2010 for Mexican citizen Jose Aguilar-Lucas, 36, after law enforcement officials in Baja California Sur charged him with homicide, according to Department of Homeland Security officials.

Aguilar-Lucas was arrested in Nov. 2013 for entering the U.S. illegally, and Ajo Station Border Patrol agents identified the homicide warrant at that time, according to DHS.

The man was convicted of criminal illegal entry and spent 40 days in federal prison. Aguilar-Lucas was also convicted of criminal illegal entry in Feb. 2011 and was removed from the U.S. four times in 2011 and 2012, DHS officials say.

DHS’s Alliance to Combat Transnational Threats combines the efforts of more than 60 agencies in Arizona and Mexico to combat threats to communities on both sides of the border. Its Mexican Fugitive Removal Program utilizes Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Marshals Service in trying to identify Mexican nationals in U.S. custody with outstanding warrants in Mexico and return them to the country.
