Man Caught Smuggling Rat Meat Into US
Customs officials have confiscated the luggage of an American man who was attempting to smuggle 19 pounds of rat meat into the country from Africa.
The unpreserved meat, known simply as Bush Meat, comes from wild species in Africa, legal or illegal and includes antelope, elephant, monkey, and rodents. Authorities consider it to be a potential carrier of zoonotic, or animal-to-human, viruses like Ebola, HIV or monkeypox, and have banned its importation into the States.
Cane rat was was added to the ban list in June 2003, after the African rodent species were found to be responsible for an outbreak of monkeypox.

Another example of foreign imports taking over the home grown meat industry. Hey,cut it out,we have tons of home grown Rats(including some 2 legged varieties)so stop cutting into our Rat meat business !!

The FDA needs to give Rat Meat Licenses to some local entreprenuers but ONLY for USA Rats.

I read that is "fashionable" for the "new wealthy" of Africa to have "bush meat" brought to them at their palacial city townhomes to help them "keep in touch with their roots". This tragically has resulted in an acceleration of the demise of endangered African wildlife species such as chimpanses and gorillas, which are considered great delicacies. Africa sadly seems to be a bottomless pit of corruption, and now they are bringing those ways here, usually with the active assistance of religious charities which helped "relocate" them for "humanitarian" reasons.

I personally think it would be disgusting to eat a rat, but this has nothing to do with race or culture or food from home. Eating that stuff can infect them with Ebola or monkey pox, among other diseases that we don't have here (yet). That's why they have no right to smuggle "food" into this country.

Poor planning, it would have been easy to bring additional "rats" across the mexican border.

When did this happen? I remember reading the same or a similar post within the last several months.
