The NYPD and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) are investigating the discovery of packages containing 40 pounds of cocaine at the headquarters of the United Nations last week.

A source told FOX News that the cocaine was first discovered when the packages were scanned by UN security.

In a statement Thursday, a spokesman for UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon said two suspicious mail bags had been intercepted by UN security personnel.

The statement did not acknowledge what was found inside the bags.

"The United Nations nor anyone located in the United Nations was the intended recipient of this delivery and the bags were not UN bags, diplomatic or other," the statement said.

The spokesman noted that the investigation had been turned over to the DEA and NYPD and referred all further inquiries to those law enforcement agencies.

Contacted by NewsCore, a NYPD spokesman said he was aware of a "situation" at the UN last week but declined to elaborate.
