SAN YSIDRO, Calif. — Authorities say a U.S. Border Patrol agent shot and wounded a man throwing rocks at agents near the U.S.-Mexico border in the San Diego area.

Sgt. Kerry Tom of the San Diego police, who were called for backup and are investigating the shooting, says a group who had crossed to the U.S. side of the border threw rocks at agents Tuesday night.

Tom says the officers tried unsuccessfully to disperse the crowd by firing pepper balls, and one officer fired a bullet and hit a man.

The man fled into Mexico, was found at a hospital and arrested by Mexican authorities.

Tom said the man had survived but did not know more about his condition.

A message left with a Border Patrol spokesman Wednesday morning was not immediately returned.
