Man faces drug charges after traffic stop yields marijuana

May 11, 2005

A Mexican national faces two felony drug charges after a search of his car during a traffic stop May 6 on Highway 95 allegedly turned up more than 600 pounds of marijuana.

Rogelio Bejarano Barboza was charged with transportation of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia in Yuma Justice Court on Tuesday.

Despite a request by the prosecutor's office to increase his bail, Yuma Justice of the Peace pro tem David Cooper ordered Barboza held on more than a $100,000 bond.

Cooper set Barboza's next court appearance, a preliminary hearing, for 3 p.m. on May 17.

According to court records, Barboza was stopped by law enforcement officers May 6 on Highway 95 near Milepost 55, about 30 miles north of Yuma, because the car he was driving had fictitious plates.

Court records also indicated that a large quantity of marijuana packaged for sale was in plain view inside the vehicle. A records check of the car indicated it had been stolen.

Barboza was arrested and booked into the Yuma County jail.
