SAN DIEGO -- A man was seriously injured Thursday night when he tried to elude a U.S. Customs officer by hiding under a moving freight train, San Diego police said.

The Customs officer was inspecting a freight train in San Ysidro at about 11 p.m. as it was returning to the U.S. after dropping off freight in Mexico. When the agent spotted a 24-year-old man, the man ran off and the agent pursued him, police said.

When the man ducked under a moving freight car, the train's wheels amputated his leg below the knee and three fingertips on his right hand, according to police.

The victim, whose name was not released, was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to a local hospital. Police said his injuries were serious, but he was expected to survive.
